Police Probation Team

What is the Police Probation Team?

The Police Probation Team (PPT) is a community based diversion program designed to handle first-time juvenile offenders involved in minor violations of law or status offenses. Upon successful completion of the program, pending charges may be dismissed.

Program Goals

The goals of the PPT program include the following:

  • Reduce the rates of recidivism.
  • To teach responsibility by holding juvenile offenders accountable for their actions.
  • To counter criminal behavior through concepts of hard work and self reliance.

How does a juvenile offender get in the program?

The Police Probation Team is composed of a police officer and an outreach worker. The program begins when a juvenile is arrested in the field by an officer or referred by juvenile court. The team schedules a hearing and notifies the juvenile and his or her parents by mail of the date, time, and location to appear. The juvenile, along with his or her parent(s). The conditions of the contract are determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the offense committed. Some of the conditions that could be included in the contract include community service and counseling. The team tracks the progress of the youth while the contract is in effect. Juveniles who successfully complete the program will avoid going to juvenile court and having official charges filed against them. To the contrary, failure to complete a program may result in court fines or fees, and charges being filed on the original violation. In 2010, two hundred fifty-six juveniles successfully completed the PPT program. It should also be noted that the program works to assist juveniles in finding employment by working with employment agencies.
