Training Academy

Under the command of Lieutenant Gerald Matwiejczyk, the Toledo Police Academy is an extremely active component of the Toledo Police Department. The following are a few highlights of the many things they do...

The Toledo Police Wellness Program.  This very important program continues year in and year out and encompasses all the officers on the department.
The Academy conducts Pursuit Driving Training for all officers assigned to the Operations Division.  This training takes place in new vehicles that have been specially equipped for that purpose.
The Academy sponsors the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol
(RSVP)
program, with classes of new volunteers graduating at frequent intervals.  The week-long training instructs senior citizens in a wide range of law enforcement topics to help prepare them for their duties in the program.
The 2006 Citizens Police Academy will began in September and run for 10 weeks.  The training will provide an overview of the police functions to 26 members of our community.
The Crisis Intervention Team Training Academy took place in April and May.  The CIT officers received in-depth training from professionals in the mental health field.

Mandatory in-service training courses completed during the year included:

Many more courses were offered in addition to the 40-hour mandatory training.  Several elective courses were offered to police officers from the Toledo Police Department, as well as other jurisdictions in our region.  Some examples include:

In addition, the Toledo Police Academy co-hosted many training sessions with the Public Agency Training Council from Indianapolis, Indiana.  The instructors for the courses are all highly qualified and experienced in a wide array of police related subject matter.  Over thirty different sessions were held and each received very favorable evaluations.
