FALSE ALARM OFFICE

In March, 1997, Toledo's false alarm ordinance was enacted. This ordinance holds business and residential alarm owners accountable for repeated false burglary and robbery alarms. When the police respond to a false alarm at a business or private residence, a warning letter is issued. A response to a second false alarm at the same address results in a $25 dollar fine. Subsequent false alarm responses result in fines that increase in $25 increments up to a maximum of $250 per incident. The owner of the address is responsible for paying the amount of each false alarm fine including any balance of previous fines.

This method of enforcement has resulted in a significant decrease in false alarms, allowing officers to spend more time on legitimate calls for service.
