The Check Office is responsible for a variety of criminal cases involving checks and forged negotiable items. Counterfeit checks have become the major workload of the unit as computer generation of checks is becoming widespread. Detectives in the unit work closely with banks and small businesses in a cooperative effort to curtail losses and apprehend suspects.
If you have received a "bad" check (insufficient funds, counterfeit, closed account, or stop payment), the first step is to complete a crime report. This can be done at either of the district stations (Scott Park Station on Nebraska or the Central District Station, Safety Building on Erie Street), the Northwest Sub-Station on Sylvania Avenue or the CAPS Sub-Station on Cherry Street. You can also complete a report over the phone by contacting our non-emergency number at 419-245-3340. The report will be routed to the commander of the Technical Crimes Section for review.
