Forfeiture Unit

Officers Displaying Seized Cash
The Forfeiture Unit is comprised of
one Sergeant and one Detective. The unit primarily works with
the Vice/Narcotics Unit and the Metro Drug Task Force. The unit
is responsible for seizing currency or assets purchased with proceeds
from illegal activity or assets, which were used in the commission
of illegal activities. Investigators work closely with Federal,
State and local prosecutors assisting whenever possible in the
financial aspects of the case.
Since 1993, through the efforts of
the Department personnel and the Forfeiture Unit, over $3.5 million
dollars has been awarded to the Toledo Police Department. Some
of this money has been disbursed to members of the agencies of
the Drug Task Force and to the local Prosecutor's Office.
The funds have also been expended on
the purchase of new weapons, computers, and office furniture and
also are used to provide matching funds to obtain Federal Grants.
A portion of seized money is returned to the community through alcohol and drug addiction
service agencies and programs.
Vehicles used in the commission of
felony offenses are also subject to forfeiture. The Toledo Police
Department has been awarded approximately 350 vehicles. Some have
been used for undercover work, but the majority are sold at public auction.
The Forfeiture Unit also investigates
certain financial crimes and accepts information from citizens
concerning drug dealers and other criminals with hidden assets
directly, or through the Crime Stopper program.
