FIELD TRAINING OFFICERS

The Field Training Officer (FTO) is the essential means by which the goal of field training is achieved, that is, the development of a probationary police officer to be able to work a solo assignment in a safe, skillful, productive, and professional manner.  The task of the FTO in reaching this goal is made more difficult by the fact that the role of patrol officer with beat responsibilities must be maintained during the training and evaluation process.  The FTO must be able to demonstrate to the probationary officer what quality police work looks like.
