Driving Safety

Driving safety is everyone's business. Here are a few laws we should all keep in mind to help keep our roads safe.

Schools

  • The speed limit in areas surrounding school sites is 25 MPH when children are present.
  • Vehicles may not block traffic to drop off or pick up students.
  • It is unlawful to make a u-turn in front of a school site if traffic is approaching within 200 feet from either direction. We advise against any u-turns in front of schools.
  • All vehicles must stop for a school bus displaying red lights and stop signs if the bus is in the direction you are traveling. You must also stop both directions if the road is an undivided highway.

Cell Phones

  • Hands free devices are required for all drivers. This also applies when drivers are stopped at a traffic light.
  • Texting while driving is prohibited, even when a vehicle is stopped.
  • Drivers under 18 may not use a cell phone, hands–free or not.

Pedestrians

  • Vehicles must yield to pedestrians in any crosswalk.
  • Pedestrians must enter a crosswalk safely and move through the crosswalk without delaying traffic. Any crossing outside of a crosswalk means the pedestrian must yield to vehicles.
  • Pedestrians must use the sidewalk for travel, not the bike lane or street.

Bicycles, Scooters, Skateboards

  • Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet while riding a bike, scooter, skateboard or rollerblades.
  • Bicycles must travel the same direction as vehicles and stop at any signs or signals.
  • Bikes ridden through intersections need to be with the traffic direction and outside of a crosswalk.
  • Bikes in a crosswalk must be walked.
  • Bikes must have required equipment, such as reflectors and brakes.

Parking and Stopping

  • Vehicles may not block a crosswalk.
  • Vehicles may not stop if the traffic signs say no stopping, even to drop off a passenger.
  • Vehicles may not stop in a bus zone. Vehicles must park within 18 inches of the curb and face the same direction as traffic.

Restraints

  • Seat Belts are required at all times for all vehicle occupants.
  • Children under the age of 8 must be in an approved supplemental child restraint and should be seated in the rear seat of the vehicle.
