The Toledo Police Department's
Motorcycle Unit

Across the country motorcycles have long been utilized as a law enforcement tool. An examination of the history of the Toledo Police Department reveals that we are not an exception as motorcycles have played a major role in our law enforcement efforts.
In late 1997, the decision was made to re-institute the motorcycle unit. Under former Chief Jerry Galvin, a lease agreement was negotiated with the Harley Davidson Motor Company for six of their Road King motorcycles. These motorcycles are fully equipped with emergency lights, siren, radio, as well as other emergency equipment so that each may be used for a variety of law enforcement activities.
Two motorcycles are assigned to each of three district stations and are currently limited to daylight operations. At this time each unit is used primarily as a platform for both laser and radar speed enforcement. Officers assigned to the motorcycle unit have received extensive training and are certified motor operators.
