The Property Management Unit, a component of the Support Services
Bureau and under the command of Sergeant Edward Mack, is responsible for the
safe keeping and disposition of all property and evidence received or
confiscated by Toledo Police Officers.
Every type of property imaginable, other than vehicles, can be found in
the storage areas of the unit at one time or another. It is the job of the officers working in the unit to log in
each piece of property, recording the information in our computer system, then
to properly secure and store each item so that it is available when needed for
court - or to be returned to the rightful owner.
There
are approximately 50,000 items in the property room at any given time.
These range from the smallest pieces of jewelry to complete bath and
shower enclosures, old license plates to works of art.
And always lots and lots of bicycles.
ITEM RELEASE / DISPOSAL
When
these items are no longer needed as evidence, they are returned to the rightful
owner or disposed of by other means if not claimed or contraband. Items
that may have value are auctioned off. Some others are given to charity.
All contraband items are destroyed so as to prevent use or resale.

If you believe that your property may be in the property room
and you want to reclaim it, you will need to have a release form signed by the officer that
originally took the property or the detective in charge of the case.
Once the officer or detective completes the release form and forwards
that form to the Property Management Unit, you can claim your property (proper
photo ID required). Please, call ahead and have the Records Bureau number
available so we can confirm that there is a release on file. Save yourself a
trip, make sure the paperwork is done and the property is ready to pick up
before you come down!
Lost something? Call the property room at 419-245-3233. Provide a detailed description and we can check. We will need to satisfactorily determine proof of ownership before any item can be returned. Serial numbers are almost always required to return bicycles or visit our TPD Lost & Found on the web.
